♡ do-it-yourself: pom pom earrings ♡

For my first DIY post of the year I'm gonna show you guys how to make your very own pom pom earrings
à la Strawberry Switchblade. I actually put this tutorial together months ago, but I'm only posting it now because I've been a super lazy blogger (please forgive me! -.-) Enjoy!~

Making the Pom Poms:
Start by winding some yarn around your hand...
Continue winding the yarn around your hand until you've got a pretty good amount wrapped around there snugly. Keep in mind that the less yarn you wind the less puffy your pom poms will be.

P.S. If you don't fancy the idea of having all the circulation cut off in your fingers for a bit, try using a small piece of cardboard that's about the same width as your hand instead!

After you finish winding the yarn, use your index finger and thumb on your opposite hand to *carefully* remove the bundle of yarn from your other hand.
Place the bundle of yarn -horizontally- on top of another longish piece of yarn. Take the two ends of the longish piece of yarn and tie them together as tight as you can get'em. Finish them off with a triple knot so they won't come apart!
After you tie the bundle off you'll have a bunch of loops on either side of the cinch. You can go ahead and cut through each and every one of these loops with your scissors.
Once you have all the loops cut you might notice that there are one or two of these tiny loops still left. Don't cut through these like you did with the others! Instead, use another piece of yarn or a piece of tape or something to mark one of them so you don't get confused. You'll need this loop later on in the tutorial!
Next, use your scissors to trim away all the long uneven strands of yarn. There will likely be A LOT of excess yarn that'll need to be trimmed away before your pom pom even begins to look like a pom pom, so be patient!
Once you've trimmed off what will probably seem like ALL of the yarn you'll be left with a fluffy little pom pom like this one.

Making the Earrings:
Now it's time to start putting our earrings together! For this tutorial I'll be using clip-on's that have a ball at the top and a little hook towards the bottom. If you have pierced ears try looking for an earring finding similar to this one when you go out to the craft store. In addition to the earring clips/hooks, you'll also need another longish piece of matching yarn and your pom poms.
Start by taking a piece of yarn and twisting it on itself (if that makes any sense?) to make a little rope like the one above.
Hook the top of the little yarn 'rope' onto the earring clip hook and close it with some pliers.
Weave the ends of yarn rope through the little loop that we left on the pom pom. Triple tie the ends of the yarn rope as close to the loop on the pom pom as you can get so it'll look smooth and cohesive.
For the little knot accent at the top you'll need to form a large knot with some yarn and super glue it to the top of the earring finding.

And that's really all there is to it! As always, let me know if you actually make a pair of these! I'd love to see what you come up with. ○^▽^○

    1. I don't have pierced ears either! That's why I used clips. A headband sounds cool too, though! ^_^

  8. Oh, that's cool, I think I can make clip-on earrings that way too and add a little something over where should be the actual earring on my clips. (it makes sense in my head! I bought small clip-on earrings bases where the parts that's round on yours are flat, so I can glue something pretty on it and make my own earrings! like this: http://img.gets.cn/110326/275/1301111208202394_275.jpg)
I thought about make pompom scarves recently too, but don't have the yarn I want :(
Thanks for showing that it's possible to make pompoms using only your hand, too. I'm always to lazy to search for cardboard or things.
PS: the captcha asks me to type: weedsaa which I find funny.

    1. Of course! Just attach the little yarn rope to the loop that's at the bottom of the hook. It should work just fine! :)
